Five local students were among 60 from across the province who gathered in Abbotsford over the long weekend to display their history projects at the B.C. Heritage Fair.
The event was held in the city for the first time and showcased the projects completed by winners of school and regional fairs previously held across the province. Five student delegates were selected from each of the 12 regions across B.C.
Their projects were displayed to the public on Canada Day at the Cadet Building at Abbotsford Exhibition Park. There is no judging at the provincial level nor is there a national event.
Participants also marched in the Canada Day Parade along South Fraser Way, visited heritage sites in the Fraser Valley – including the Gur Sikh Temple in Abbotsford – and attended workshops.
Abbotsford students participating in the B.C. Heritage Fair were:
• Tage Dhillon from King Traditional Elementary, with a project on the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge;
• Harpreet Sahota from John Maclure Community Elementary, with a project on John McCrae;
• Jenna Sanga of King Traditional Elementary, and her project “Chinese Canadians – A History of Struggle, Determination and Triumph”;
• Sophie Mar from Upper Sumas Elementary with her project “The Doukhobors”; and
• Avneet Sidhu from Dashmesh Punjabi School with her project on the Komagata Maru journey.
