Barbell Beatdown at Berrybeat Festival

Fitness event raises funds for Abbotsford Hopsice Society

The second annual Matt Robic Memorial Barbell Beatdown takes place Saturday, July 6 in Abbotsford as part of the Berrybeat Festival.

The event raises funds for the Abbotsford Hospice Society, which is currently building the Holmberg House adult hospice as part of the Campus of Care project next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

The competition measures overall fitness in three different workouts throughout the day.

The workouts are kept confidential until 24 hours before the competition begins, but could include activities such as basic gymnastics, plyometrics, powerlifting, running, odd-object lifting and rowing.

After two workouts, the top competitors advance to the third and final event.

Awards go to the top three men and top three women.

The event runs outdoors from 9 a.m. until about 5:30 p.m. in Historic Downtown Abbotsford.

It is held in memory of Mission’s Matt Robic, who died in October 2011 at the age of 26 from injuries suffered in a plane crash in Richmond.

As co-pilot, he helped save the lives of the passengers on board. Pilot Luc Fortin also died in the crash.
