Abbotsford Christian School (ACS) recently added a new electric school bus to its fleet, a first for Abbotsford or Chilliwack schools.

ACS executive director Julius Siebenga said, as part of its strategic goals, the school made the decision to save money over the long term and create a healthier community where students have a clean, healthy ride to school every day.

He said, with government and corporate grants, the school estimates that although the purchase price was slightly more expensive than a diesel-burning bus, the costs will be recouped in the first two years of fuel savings.

In addition, maintenance costs will be drastically reduced, he said.

“I was so excited to see this new electric bus drive onto our property for the first time,” Siebenga said. “It represents a visionary desire for our school to combine safety, efficiency, and creation care while being fiscally responsible.”

The state-of-the-art, fully electric, 76-passenger bus will transport students on one of ACS’s eight bus routes, which service Abbotsford, Mission and Chilliwack.
