The front porch of historic Trethewey House at 2313 Ware Street will be the setting this summer for the MSA Museum Society “Story Time on the Porch” beginning Tuesday, July 5.

Heritage site staff and volunteers along with guest speakers will share stories suitable for all ages at 10 a.m. from Tuesday to Saturday.

On July 19 and July 29, story tellers from the Fraser Valley Regional Library will be on the porch to read books from the library’s collection of favourites.

Featured speakers will include Kris Foulds, the curator of historical collections at The Reach Gallery Museum, who will provide a look at “The Colourful life of Margaret Weir (1912 – 1998)” on Saturday, July 9 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Cartoonist Ernie Poignant will speak on Saturday July 16 from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Kris Foulds will be back on Thursday, July 21 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a women’s history Trethewey House tour.

On Thursday, Aug. 11, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Foulds will tackle the topic of “What’s in a Name?”

And on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Foulds will be part of the “The Shady Side” Trethewey House tour.

An interpretive tour around Abbotsford’s Mill Lake offers a look back at the past, when Mill Lake was home to the Abbotsford Lumber Company – the third largest employer in BC in the early 1900’s.

Participants will hear how the “Mill Town” that was built up around it would have rivalled the Village of Abbotsford in population.

Christina Reid, Trethewey house collections and site manager will conduct the tours, weather permitting, on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. beginning at the Heritage Gallery at 2313 Ware Street.

On Saturday August 13, the MSA Museum will revive the 1920-style Summer Social that was held at Trethewey House until the mid 1990’s.

The day will include free ice cream sponsored by the Old Spaghetti Factory, old fashioned games, movies in the Gallery and the annual invitation-only Pioneer Tea. Community groups are invited to attend and participate. Contact Kelly Railton, Executive Director, MSA Museum Society at kelly.r@msamuseum.ca for information.

Trethewey House is open for drop-in tours of up to five people from Tuesday to Saturday beginning July 5.

Group tours for more than five can be arranged by emailing Christina.r@msamuseum.ca.
