Riverside College has expanded its trades and career training opportunities to offer a five-month information technology technician (ITT) program.
Students will earn credit toward a college-level ITT certificate as well as two industry association standardized certificates in technology. The inaugural class started in late January.
Graduates will learn how to work in the customer service sector of the information technology industry, which includes call centre support, desktop support, small business IT support, and entry level IT administrator.
The program also includes two work placement opportunities for students, and teams will complete a 120-hour community-based project, said Riverside principal Cathy Anderson.
The college is seeking work placements for its students, that would run 20 days, approximately six hours daily. The independent projects are aimed at giving back to the community while providing ITT candidates with real world hardware and software experience.
ITT instructor Greg McNeill sees benefits for both the student and potential employer.
“The work placement terms are an opportunity for the students to practise hardware and software skills as technicians, and learn how they can find a job in the information technology industry. The volunteer organizations can use the work placement as the evaluation for a potential employee.”
