A donation from a local philanthropic family has been made towards a new ventilator for the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH).

Ventilators are used for life support to help babies breathe better as their lungs are not working well enough.

In many cases, premature babies require the support of a ventilator (bedside machine) to help them receive oxygen to the lungs.

The donation from the Sandhar family now enables the hospital to provide neonatal patients with lifesaving equipment to help protect their vital organs.

Gaurav Sandhar said the family is “very excited” to see the ventilator arrive in the NICU.

“The NICU team in the Abbotsford Regional Hospital is fantastic and we know it will be a big help,” Sandhar said.

The donation to the hospital was made through the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, which raises money for vital equipment and programs funded or endorsed by Fraser Health in Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs.
