A young Abbotsford soccer player could be hitting the pitch in New York later this year against some of the best U12 players on the globe.

Abbotsford native Tristan Miyagi has earned a spot on Team Western Canada for the Danone Nations Cup Final in Montreal, which runs from July 3 to 6. Tryouts for the team were held in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City back in April.

If Miyagi and his Western Canadian teammates can defeat Team Eastern Canada in Montreal they will head to the Danone World Finals in New York in September.

Miyagi, a Grade 6 student at Clayburn Middle School, spent four years playing in the Abbotsford Soccer Association before making it on to Surrey United of the BC Soccer Premier League.

He has continually advanced through programs such as Roman Tulis’s European Soccer School of Excellence and also FC Bescola Vancouver for the last two years.

He also represented FC Bescola Vancouver internationally two times, with the most recent one this past April in Spain. The team finished 15th out of 43 teams entered from 20 countries at that event.
