The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) is renewing its approval under the Integrated Pest Management Act for activities, including the use of pesticides, involved in its mosquito control program. These activities are conducted under the guidance of a Pest Management Plan (PMP), which is being developed by the FVRD for the 2024-2029 mosquito seasons.
The majority of floodwater mosquitoes in the FVRD breed along the banks of rivers and lakes where seasonal flooding and seepage occur. Mosquito larvae activity is monitored each spring throughout the region, and breeding sites that have significant larvae abundance are treated using bacterial larvicides with the active ingredients Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) or Bacillus sphaericus (Bsph). Both Bti (trade names Aquabac 200G, Vectobac 200G, Aquabac XT, or Vectobac 1200L) and Bsph (trade name Vectolex CG) are registered for use in Canada for this purpose, are target-specific to mosquito larvae, and are environmentally safe. The goal of the program is to reduce the presence of floodwater mosquitoes to tolerable levels.
The bacterial larvicides are applied by hand or by helicopter to areas in which the PMP applies: on seasonally-flooded non-private lands, or on owner-approved private lands, that are actively producing floodwater mosquito larvae within the region. A person wishing to provide information about a proposed treatment site, relevant to the development of the PMP, may send information to the applicant at the address below within 30 days of the publication of this notice.
