Members of the Royal Canadian Legion held a parade and wreath-laying ceremony in Abbotsford today (Friday) for the opening ceremonies of the organization's 52nd biennial convention.

The convention for the BC/Yukon command opened this afternoon and runs until Sunday at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre.

About 300 members are expected to attend.

The opening parade took place at the City of Abbotsford cenotaph in civic plaza.

The legion in the B.C. and Yukon has 55,000 members who contribute over 600,000 volunteer hours each year and support over 400 youth groups, including Cadets, Scouts Canada and Girl Guides.

The organization also donates $7 million per year to community health, education and sports programs; provides housing and social services support for homeless veterans; and raises more than $21 million through gaming for academic and youth programs.
