Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford is currently under lockdown after an inmate was assaulted on Saturday evening.
A press release indicated that the injured inmate was found just before 8:30 p.m. and was evaluated by staff members and transported to an outside hospital for treatment.
The institution is investigating the incident and released no further details.
The warden ordered a lockdown and a search of the prison. Assistant warden Marie Cossette said normal operations will resume “when it is safe to do so.”
Visits have been suspended until the search is completed.
“The safety and security of institutions, their staff and the public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” Cossette said.
Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident and “take the appropriate measures,” Cossette added.
Matsqui Institution is a medium-security federal facility.
