A fatal hit-and-run that took place last Friday in Abbotsford has now been turned over to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT),who has also released the victim's name.
Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound of IHIT said there is evidence that the hit-and-run that killed Dwayne McCormick, 41, might have been a deliberate act.
The announcement was made this morning (Thursday).
“The investigation to date suggests that this incident stemmed from an argument between the suspect and a resident in the area. The victim, who also resides in the area, became engaged in this argument, which precipitated his injuries and ultimately his death,” Pound said.
The incident took place at about 5 p.m. Friday in the 2200 block of McKenzie Rd.
Police who were dispatched to the scene found McCormick suffering from serious injuries, with witnesses reporting that he had been struck by a small passenger-sized vehicle which fled the scene.
Mario Richard Delellis, 44, of Abbotsford was arrested the following day and charged with aggravated assault, assault, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
McCormick died in hospital on Sunday.
The charges against Delellis were stayed on Wednesday, as IHIT investigates and considers whether new charges will be laid.
"IHIT will continue to gather evidence and speak with potential witnesses. Once the evidence-gathering stage has been exhausted, we will better be able to assess whether or not charges will be forthcoming," Pound said.
