The Abbotsford Police Department has bought a new device that allows it to create 3D recreations of accident sites.

The scanner, bought from Leica Geosystems, cost the department $148,000, according to the city’s revised financial plan recently approved.

Leica’s website says the devices help police forces open roadways sooner by collecting digital 3D data through laser scanning technology.

The devices are used to document accident scenes and analyze crushed cars.
