Tristan Underwood has flown around the world on unconventional wings.

The 21-year-old has just returned from an Asian tour, flying kites at festivals in India, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

“Sport kite-flying … is a unique sport or art form where basically you do cool tricks with kites, to music,” he says.

Underwood was only four when his dad introduced him to kite-flying.

“I thought it was a really cool thing to do and I thought it was really unique because of all the tricks and stuff you could do,” he says.

Underwood has stuck with the craft ever since, practising dipping, looping and twisting his kites – all to the rhythm – almost every day. He says flying his kites is “very freeing,” as it combines exercise and dance.

He owns upwards of 20 kites, in different shapes, colours and string configurations.

The activity often raises curiosity when he practises in public parks. Passersby will often ask what he’s doing, and Underwood says he’s happy to explain his craft.

Growing up in Abbotsford, Underwood knew only his dad as a fellow sport kite-flyer but has since been able to connect with others online.

He has also attended kite-flying gatherings, where he has been able to learn and connect with fellow flyers.

Underwood recently performed at the Jam in Jubilee concert series, keeping the audience entertained between music sets.

He continues to book performances at festivals and events throughout the Lower Mainland.

Underwood says he’s lucky to make a living doing what he loves.

“It’s my passion, it’s my life; it’s my profession as well.”
