BC United has announced that Markus Delves will serve as its candidate for Abbotsford South in the next provincial election.

Delves was among the BC United (formerly the BC Liberal Party) candidates announced Monday evening (Dec. 11) by party leader Kevin Falcon at Gian’s Sweetshop and Banquet Hall in Abbotsford.

The MLA for Abbotsford South is currently Bruce Banman, who left BC United in September to join the BC Conservatives. It’s not yet know whether Banman will seek re-election.

Delves is a chartered professional accountant and retired naval officer who is currently involved in his family’s business building homes in the region.

He is an active community volunteer serving on the boards of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and the Fraser Valley Indo-Canadian Business Association.

He said his focus is on affordability, health-care improvement and economic strength.

“I know that only a government under the leadership of Kevin Falcon can address critical health-care challenges, the cost-of-living crisis, lack of affordable housing, and unsafe streets in Abbotsford South and across the province,” Delves said.

Also announcing their candidacy for the BC United was Karen Long, who will run in the new Langley-Abbotsford riding.

Long’s background is in accounting. She established a successful office supply store in Aldergrove and is involved in the Food Recovery program at Langley Meals on Wheels Society.

“As a mother and a grandmother, I’m committed to delivering real results and building a brighter future for this generation, and my grandchildren’s generation. I know that with BC United, we can build a better future for all of British Columbia,” she said.

Mike de Jong currently serves as the BC United MLA for Abbotsford West and has not announced whether he will run again.

No BC United candidate has yet been announced for Abbotsford-Mission, which is currently served by NDP MLA Pam Alexis, who announced last week that she will seek-election.

British Columbians are set to go to the polls on Oct. 19, 2024.
