Community accessibility plan underway in Abbotsford

City seeks public input through survey and engagement sessions

The City of Abbotsford is conducting a survey and holding several community engagement sessions to gather feedback about ways to remove barriers for people with disabilities and other marginalized populations.

The city is in the process of developing a community accessibility plan to build on current “accessibility achievements to date” and to meet the legislated requirements of the Accessible British Columbia Act.

A survey, directed towards people who face barriers to accessibility, is being conducted online at letstalkabbotsford.ca.

Community engagement sessions take place:

• April 6 – 1 to 3 p.m. at Aberdeen elementary, 2975 Bradner Rd.;

• April 10 – 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the library atrium in building G at University of the Fraser Valley, 33844 King Rd.;

• April 15 – 6 to 8 p.m. at Matxwi elementary gym, 33661 Elizabeth Ave.;

• April 25 – 5 to 7 p.m. on Zoom;

• May 2 – 6 to 8 p.m. at Mt. Lehman elementary gym, 6381 Mt. Lehman Rd.;

• May 13 – 6 to 8 p.m. Sema:th elementary gym, 36321 Vye Rd.;

• May 25 – 10 a.m. to noon, Auguston Traditional elementary gym, 36367 Stephen Leacock Dr.;

• May 30 – 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Abbotsford Community Library, 33355 Bevan Ave.;

• June 8 – 10 a.m. to noon on Zoom; and

• June 15 – 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

All sessions will have a Punjabi interpreter available, and most will also have an ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter.

A draft form of the plan is estimated to be complete by July, with final approval slated for October.
