The first-generation daughter of Russian Mennonite immigrants gives a talk called A Whirlwind Tour of Mennonite History on Tuesday, May 17.

Elma (Martens) Schemenauer will be at Abbotsford Community Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The stories of her family inspired her 1940s-era novel Consider the Sunflowers.

She grew up in Saskatchewan in the Elbow-Davidson-Outlook area.

Schemenauer worked in publishing in Toronto for many years and is the author of 76 published books, many of them about history and community life.

She has spoken to groups, including Mennonite-history assemblies in Winnipeg and Toronto, the Federation of BC Writers, the Canadian Authors Association, and The Word Guild.

Schemenauer has also addressed writers’ conferences in Saskatoon and Toronto.
