Information night on youth sexual exploitation

Event takes place March 3 at Abbotsford Community Services

The Fraser Valley Community Action Team (FVCAT) holds an information night on Tuesday, March 3 to discuss the factors associated with youth at risk of sexual exploitation and the resources available.

The event runs from 7 to 8 p.m. at Abbotsford Community Services (ACS), 2420 Montrose Ave.

The evening will be facilitated by Sheila Lum, Stop Exploiting Youth (SEY) worker and chair of FVCAT, and Pamela Jones, ACS family and youth worker.

“Sexual exploitation of youth is happening behind closed doors,” Lum said.

“We need to be aware that (it) is happening in our community. With awareness, we can reduce the numbers and put an end to the sexual exploitation of our youth.”

Lum said sexual exploitation involves the exchange of a sexual act for money, drugs, food, shelter, transportation, love, acceptance or any other consideration.
