Abbotsford UFV professor nominated for YWCA Women of Distinction Award

Awneet Sivia of Abbotsford has been nominated for a YWCA Women of Distinction Award.

An Abbotsford woman has been nominated for a YWCA Metro Vancouver Women of Distinction Award.

Awneet Sivia, associate vice-president of teaching and learning at University of the Fraser Valley, is nominated in the category of Education, Training and Development.

Sivia’s work focuses on dismantling traditional barriers and designing activities and assignments that are inclusive for students.

As department head and chair of the master of education program, Sivia orchestrated the Educational Leadership Summit and ConnectED 2023, fostering collaboration and enhancing teaching quality.

Dedicated to equity, she participates in the Equity Backpack and Voices of Courage projects. She is also involved in establishing networks such as the South Asian Canadian Teacher Educators Network and the Saffron Threads curriculum project.

In 2022, Sivia received a West Coast Teaching Excellence Award as one of the province’s top teaching professors.

The Women of Distinction Awards honour individuals and organizations whose outstanding activities and achievements contribute to the well-being and future of the community.

The 41st annual awards gala takes place May 13 at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver. Recipients will be honoured in 12 categories.

Since 1984, YWCA Metro Vancouver has paid tribute to more than 355 award recipients and 2,188 nominees.
