Abbotsford residents contributed more than 2,500 gift-filled shoeboxes to the Operation Christmas Child program in 2023, according to recently released figures.

A press release from Samaritan’s Purse, which runs the program, says the local contribution was among almost 54,000 shoeboxes packed across the province – a three per cent increase over 2022 – and 425,000 across Canada last year.

Operation Christmas Child invites people to fill shoeboxes with items such as toys, school supplies and personal-care products. The boxes are then distributed to children living in areas that are impacted by war, poverty, disease and disaster.

The program has been operating since 1993, collecting and delivering 220 million boxes during that time to kids in more than 170 countries and territories.

“We are thrilled to see the enthusiastic participation of Canadians in Operation Christmas Child,” said Kendra Shields, the program’s Canadian director. “It is very encouraging to know that so many generous people want to give hope and joy to children in need around the world.”

Across Canada, shoebox packers often shop for deals on items throughout the year, and many become year-round volunteers.

Although drop-off locations for gifts are closed until November, anyone can still be a part of the project by packing a shoebox gift online at PackaBox.ca.

Information about ways to get involved year-round can also be found at SamaritansPurse.ca/OCC or by calling 1-800-303-1269.
