After breaking a couple of AHL records in recent weeks, the Abbotsford Heat found out what it's like to be on the wrong end of a record performance.
Jason Zucker tied a league mark for the fastest overtime goal, notching the game-winner just five seconds into the extra session to lift the Houston Aeros to a 3-2 win over the Heat on Sunday.
It was the third five-second OT goal in AHL history – Dave Saatzer of the Nova Scotia Voyageurs did it in 1980, and and Chris Corrinet of the Portland Pirates matched the feat in 2002.
Abbotsford (12-2-4, 28 points) still sits atop the AHL overall standings after putting the finishing touches on a five-game road trip where they picked up seven of a possible 10 points.
The Heat's scorching start to the season has been highlighted by records of their own – they scored twice in three seconds against the Toronto Marlies on Nov. 1 to set a new standard for the fastest two goals by the same team, and Barry Brust eclipsed Johnny Bower's 55-year-old record for longest shutout streak on Saturday against the San Antonio Rampage. Brust kept the puck out of the net for 268 minutes and 17 seconds, encompassing parts of five games.
But on Sunday at Houston's Toyota Centre, it was the Aeros' turn in OT.
Goals by Justin Fontaine and David McIntyre staked the hosts to a pair of one-goal leads, while the Heat got markers from Brett Olson and Joe Piskula to knot the score both times.
Aeros goalie Matt Hackett stopped 18 of 20 shots to earn the victory, while his Abby counterpart Danny Taylor surrendered three goals on 23 shots.
