The Yale Lions rugby team shone under the Friday Night Lights at Rotary Stadium.

Yale scored early and often en route to a 61-7 win over the Bateman Timberwolves on Friday to win the Abbotsford Cup.

The Lions jumped out to a 39-0 lead after the first half, and held Bateman scoreless until Steve Michaud scored the Timberwolves' lone try with 22 minutes left in the second half.

Players scoring tries for the Lions included Josh Long (three), Evan Johnston (two), Connor Byron, Justin Jackson, Jared Flores, Zach Bain, Israel Bain and Ali Ghafoor.

Earlier on Friday at Rotary Stadium, Langley's R.E. Mountain Secondary converted a late kick to defeat the Mouat Hawks 23-22. The pair of games were the final matches in the Abbotsford Cup local tournament.

Friday's games were also the sport's first local foray into Friday evening games, with Yale head coach Doug Primrose pleased with the size of the crowd that packed the stands.The Lions, ranked fourth in AAA in the province, next take on the third-ranked Oak Bay at Swangard Stadium on Friday at 5 p.m. Yale also takes on Lord Tweedsmuir at home on April 26. Mouat's next game in AAA action is on May 3 when they play SouthDelta.

In AA action, Bateman hosts Rockridge on Friday, and Abbotsford Senior travels to Surrey to play Southridge Secondary also on Friday.
