Wierks named Canada West star as Cascades sweep Cougars

UFV women’s basketball player Sarah Wierks has earned Canada West first star of the week honours after leading the Cascades to a pair of victories over the Mount Royal Cougars.

The 6’2” centre from Chilliwack scored 21 points and added 17 rebounds and four blocks in Friday’s 85-58 victory over the Cougars.

In the next game against Mount Royal on Saturday, Wierks added 23 points and 15 boards in UFV’s 81-67 win. After the weekend sweep, the Cascades are 6-4 and sit in third  place in the Explorers Division.

“I thought we did some good things this weekend,” Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer said. “There were some good signs moving forward for us, for sure.”

This marks the second time this season the fifth-year senior has posted 20-plus points and 15-plus rebounds in consecutive games.

She leads Canada West in rebounding at 13.9 per game, and sits second in scoring with 18.4 points per game.
