Whalers shine in relays at provincial championships

Golden efforts by their Division 4 girls relay teams highlighted a strong showing for the Abbotsford Whalers at provincials.

Golden efforts by their Division 4 girls relay teams highlighted a strong showing for the Abbotsford Whalers at summer swimming provincials last weekend in Kamloops.

The Whalers’ Div. 4 girls swept to victory in both the medley (Amy Connorton, Brynn Kampf, Fallon Quast and Lauren Kennedy) and the freestyle (Quast, Rachel Mortimer, Connorton and Kennedy). The freestyle foursome cracked the two-minute mark, which is a huge accomplishment for girls their age.

The Div. 2 girls freestyle relay squad (Sarah Portas, Maryrose Jerodico, Naomi Unger and Emily De Jager) also climbed the podium, winning silver while shaving 10 seconds off their time from regionals.

Medalists in individual races included Haley Klenk (silver in 50 back and 100 free, bronze in 100 IM and 50 fly), Quast (silver in 50 fly, bronze in 200 IM), De Jager (silver in 50 fly, bronze in 50 free) and Mervin Jerodico (silver in 50 back).

The Whalers also had 23 athletes participate on regional relay teams, and many of the club’s swimmers made it to individual finals, thus finishing top-eight in the province.

The Whalers begin their winter program in September. For more information on the club, visit abbotsfordwhalers.com.
