Eight Junior B Tier 2 teams from all around Western Canada will be headed to Abbotsford this summer to compete in a weekend of action-packed lacrosse as part of the 2025 Western Canada Junior B Invitational, otherwise known as the MacDonald Cup.
This is only the third time that the MacDonald Cup has been held since it took a nearly three-decade hiatus, with the previous two years being held in Port Coquitlam and Taber.
The tournament was renamed in honour of Frazer MacDonald, who served as the commissioner of the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League (WCJLL) from 1982 to 2019, making him the longest-serving commissioner in the league's history.
As the host club for the upcoming event, the Valley Sturgeon Lacrosse Club will welcome some of the best Junior B Tier 2 teams from the western half of the country, which club president Angie Wolfe said she is absolutely thrilled about.
"This tournament is not just about competition, it's about honouring Frazer's legacy, whose passion and dedication to the game continues to inspire generations of lacrosse players," Wolfe said. "We're excited to make this event a memorable one for the teams and fans alike."
The MacDonald Cup invites teams from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba to participate, with a total of eight teams competing for a shot at the trophy.
Games will take place at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre from Aug. 6 to 10. The Valley Sturgeon are entering the tournament after a successful 2024 season in the WCJLL where they finished the regular season in third place with a record of 12-4 and earned a silver medal in the playoffs.
