Three athletes and one coach from Twisters Gymnastics Club were honoured at Gymnastics B.C.'s annual awards and scholarship reception.
Zachary Clay (high performance junior/senior), Nicolas Garfias (high performance argo/tyro) and Steven Chaplin (Level 4/national youth/national open) received athlete of the year awards. The prizes recognize the highest-ranked gymnast in each category based on points, and recipients must also show outstanding qualities as a leader, sportsperson and abide by the guidelines of fair play.
Chaplin's award is named after Richard Ikeda, a former Olympian and current men's coach at Twisters.
Sue Tyson, director of recreational gymnastics at Twisters, was named the 2012 PLAY Gymnastics coach of the year for Zone 3. The award recognizes a significant contribution to the development of both recreational gymnastics and their club.
