Twisters excel at local gymnastics meets

Athletes from Abbotsford's Twisters Gymnastics Club have been busy the last three weekends, attending competitions around the Fraser Valley.

The local club participated in the Flip City, Surrey and Langley gymnastics invitationals, making an impressive haul of hardware along the way.

Among the highlights were several Twisters athletes qualifying for major regional meets. Andry Friesen, Emily Moorthy and Ashlynn and Tamara Skulstad earned spots on Team B.C. at the Western Canadian Championships, which run May 3-5 in Winnipeg.

Five members of the levels 2-3 women’s team – Katrina Penner-Loat, Lexi Gaspar, Kimberly Vandermeulen, Katelyn Cotterell and Paula Melger-Ida – qualified for the provincial championships in Prince George, April 5-7.

Individual medallists from Abbotsford are as follows.

FLIP CITY (Feb. 22-24)

Trent Johnson (level 3, under 13): fifth all-around

Jeremy Filiatrault (level 2):  bronze all-around; gold on high bar; silver on parallel bars and vault; bronze on rings and pommel horse

SURREY (March 1-3)

Dawson Friesen (national youth):  silver all-around; silver on floor and pommel horse; bronze on rings, vault, and high bar

Cohen Kiers (national youth):  bronze all-around; gold on high bar; bronze on rings and parallel bars

Andrew Schmidt (national youth): fourth all-around

Curtis Olivier (national youth): bronze on pommel horse

François Barnard (national youth): silver on high bar

Andry Friesen (national open): gold on bars, bronze all-around

Katelyn Cotterrell (provincial level 2 tyro): gold on bars, beam, and all-aound, silver on floor

Zoe Rumsby (provincial level 2 argo): silver on beam, bronze on vault

Megan MacLellan (provincial level 2 argo): bronze on beam

LANGLEY (March 8-10)

Ethan Ikeda (level 1):  gold all-around

Elijah Horner (level 4, 13 and up): gold on high bar, silver on floor

Wyatt Lavers (level 4, 13 and up): gold on floor

Cohen Kiers (national youth): gold on high bar, bronze on pommel horse

Dawson Friesen (national youth): gold on floor, bronze on high bar
