Twisters athletes heading to BC Winter Games

Five local gymnasts heading to Penticton in February

A group of Abbotsford gymnasts are heading to the 2016 Penticton BC Winter Games.

Twisters Gymnastics athletes Michael Frew, Jeremy Filiatrault, Katelyn Cotterell, Jadyn Ansell, Megan Maclellan and Samantha Reitsema are all heading to Penticton from Feb. 25 to 28 to compete against some of the best in the province.

Twisters athletes heading as wild cards, meaning they could get the call in case of injury, are Logan Isfeld and Sierra Stobbe.

Frew and Filiatraut qualified for the Games after strong showings at the Games trials in Langley on Dec. 6. Frew finished first overall in his division at the event, ranking first in pommel horse, parallel bars, and horizontal bar.

Filiatrault placed third overall, with a first-place showing in the rings and second in the horizontal bar.

Ansell, Maclellan and Reitsema punched their tickets to the Games with qualifying performances at trials in North Vancouver from Dec. 11 to 13.

In other Twisters news, Steven Chaplin and Dawson Friesen have both qualified to attend the Elite Canada gymnastics event in Halifax after a successful screening event on Dec. 20.

The pair join earlier qualified Twisters gymnasts Ken Ikeda and Robert Watson. Elite Canada runs on Feb. 5 and 6 in Halifax.
