Trio of Abbotsford girls basketball teams one win away from provincial final

The Yale Lions, MEI Eagles and Abbotsford Panthers girls basketball teams can advance to their respective provincial finals with wins today.

A trio of Abbotsford high school girls basketball teams are one win away from advancing to their respective provincial finals.

The Abbotsford Panthers and Yale Lions senior girls, as well as the MEI Eagles junior girls can all punch their ticket with wins today (March 3) at the Langley Events Centre.

Yale entered the 4A tournament as the fourth seed and opened with a 75-49 over the Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils on Wednesday (March 1). Maggy Curtis led all players with 27 points in that win.

The Lions then defeated the Seaquam Seahawks 77-67 in the quarter-final round on Thursday (March 2). Samaraa Mason scored a team-high 22 points in that win.

Yale next takes on the Walnut Grove Gators tonight at 6:45 p.m. in the semifinal. The 4A provincial final is set for Saturday (March 4) at 8 p.m.

The Panthers were seeded second in the 3A tournament and defeated the Mark R. Isfeld Ice 81-28 on Wednesday. Malia Lenz dropped 24 points in the win.

Abbotsford then beat the Argyle Pipers 79-54 in the quarter-final on Thursday. Nyah Vermeulen collected a team-high 26 points in that win. The Panthers now battle the R.A. McMath Wildcats in the semifinal round today at 3:15 p.m.

The 3A final is set for Saturday at 5:45 p.m.

The MEI Eagles have gone on a bit of a Cinderella run and entered the junior girls tournament as the 10th seed.

MEI picked up wins over Crofton House (58-38) and Duchess Park (55-51) in the qualification rounds on Wednesday and then upset the second-seeded Yale Lions 41-40 on Thursday. Lola Reimer led the Eagles with 13 points and Olivia Sidhu added 12.

MEI next takes on the Brookswood Bobcats today at 4:30 p.m. The junior girls final is set for Saturday at 1:15 p.m.
