Abbotsford defenceman Devon Toews capped a memorable season by winning the top defenceman award at the RBC Cup last week.

The Surrey Eagles star was the top-scoring blueliner at the national junior A hockey championship tourney in Summerside, P.E.I., posting a goal and six assists in five games.

The ultimate prize eluded Toews and the Eagles, though. They finished second out of five teams in the round robin with a 3-1 record, but fell 3-2 in overtime to the host Summerside Western Capitals in the semifinals on Saturday. The Brooks (Alta.) Bandits defeated Summerside 3-1 in the title game.

Toews, 19, is headed to Quinnipiac University, an NCAA Div. 1 program in Hamden, Conn., on a full-ride scholarship next season.
