Timberwolves Classic basketball tournament tipping off

Bateman hosting 15 other teams at annual event starting on Jan. 19

The Timberwolves Classic basketball tournament returns on Jan. 19.

The Bateman Timberwolves Classic senior boys basketball tournament returns to Abbotsford on Jan. 19, as 16 of the top AAA teams in the province battle it out for early-season bragging rights.

The host Timberwolves, the Abbotsford Panthers and the Rick Hansen Hurricanes are the local representatives at the event.

Other teams participating are: Langley's Brookswood Secondary, Pitt Meadows, Richmond's Stevenson-London, Maple Ridge, North Vancouver's Bodwell, Vancouver's Lord Byng, North Delta, Richmond's McNair Secondary, Valleyview Secondary from Kamloops, Burnaby's Byrne Creek, Nanaimo's Wellington Secondary, Terrace's Caledonia Secondary and Richmond's R.A. McMath.

The event kicks off on Jan. 19 at 8:30 a.m. inside the Bateman gym, as the Hurricanes take on Brookswood. The host Bateman then opens against Abbotsford at 10:15 a.m.

Games continue all day and are ongoing until Jan. 21, with a pair of games occurring at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. The final occurs on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.

The Hurricanes, the defending Timberwolves Classic champions, enter the tournament as the fourth-ranked AAA team in the province. Other top 10 teams at the event include: Lord Byng (five), Byrne Creek (six), Bateman (eight) and Steveston-London (nine).

Last year's final saw Hansen defeat Burnaby's St. Thomas More Collegiate.
