Thirty-one teams and 670 figure skaters from across B.C. and Alberta descended on MSA Arena last weekend for the Mountain Regional Synchro Championships.
The event, co-hosted by the B.C. section of Skate Canada and the Abbotsford Skating Club, was deemed a "huge success" by co-ordinator Wendy Martin Stroyan.
"It was packed at MSA, particularly on the Saturday night," she noted. "It was pretty exciting."
Synchronized skating involves between eight and 20 skaters on the ice at one time, performing moves in unison.
The Abbotsford Skating Club didn't enter any teams of its own, but local athletes participated with teams from around the region. Danielle Delvicario and Katelyn Melsted of Abbotsford helped the Odyssey open team from the Pacific Ice club, which trains out of Burnaby, earn a silver medal and a berth to the national championships, which run Feb. 21-23 in Calgary.
ICE DANCERS WIN BRONZE
Abbotsford ice dancing duo Alexa Linden and Tyler Miller brought home bronze medals from the Skate Canada National Championships in Mississauga, Ont. earlier this month.
The two (pictured right) have been skating together for less than a year, but they impressed the judges with their speed and excellent connection during their free dance, set to The Beatles music from Across the Universe. They were second in the free dance (60.57) and third overall (88.13).
