Eight rugby players from Abbotsford have been named to provincial teams for the Las Vegas High School Invitational Sevens tournament.

One-third of the 12-member B.C. U18 girls sevens squad hails from Abbotsford, including Robert Bateman Secondary teammates Autumn Garrett, Sophia Belsher and Lauren Kerr, and Nakisa Levale of Abby Senior.

A trio of locals are on the U18 boys team – Noah Jensen and Gavin Rowell of Bateman, and Jason Hignell of Yale Secondary, while Yale's Noah Bain is on the B.C. U17 boys squad.

SOCCER ALL-STARS

Six players from the Abbotsford Maguson Ford United men's soccer team were picked to represent the Fraser Valley Soccer League in an all-star game earlier this month in Victoria.

The local content included defenders Sahib Phagura and Ravi Singh; midfielders Colton O'Neill, Connor O'Neill and Robbie Fadden; and striker Justin Sekhon. The all-star game ended 2-2 after regulation, and the Fraser Valley side claimed the win via penalty kicks.

The AMFU squad is the defending Pakenham Cup and SoccerCity Cup champions.

RAVENS WIN SILVER

The Eugene Reimer Ravens Grade 8 boys basketball team finished second at the Hansen Classic tournament last weekend.

The Ravens knocked off Heritage Park, L.A. Matheson, Westview and Kitsilano en route to the final, where they fell to Notre Dame. Sukhminder Kang and Karn Minhas were named to the tourney all-star team.

MANOCHA MAKES THE CUT

Dylan Manocha, a running back from Rick Hansen Secondary, has been named to B.C.’s under-15 team for next month’s USA Football International Bowl.

The team will be heading to Dallas, Tex. from Feb. 5-7. They will play a mini-game tournament at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, on Feb. 5, and will play a team of U.S. Grade 9 players two days later at the University of Texas-Arlington.
