Sports in brief: Figure skaters shine at Winterskate

Medalists from the local club included Megan Borrows (gold, silver interpretive division), Jaclyn Regier (silver, senior silver), Megan Geddes (silver, bronze interpretive), Myah Elgersma (silver, star 1 group 2), Anika Phyinney (silver, star 2 group 4), Kate Thompson (silver, star 3A group 1), Alexandra Latreille (silver, star 3B group 1), Komalpreet Chauhan (bronze, star 2 group 9), Micah Kerr (bronze, star 2 group 2) and Cylie Baier (bronze, star 3B group 9).

The club is also hosting spring registration sessions at Matsqui Recreation Centre, on Feb. 14 and 28 from 4-6 p.m.

BMX RACES THIS WEEKEND

Abbotsford BMX hosts two B.C. Cup indoor races this weekend at Agrifair Arena.

The races run Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. Entry is free, and the events are a great way for families to enjoy the sport of BMX.

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, the Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers Association will hold their 4-Cross Mountain Bike Finals at 8 p.m.

Agrifair Arena is located at Exhibition Park, 32470 Haida Drive.

CHEER CLUB EXCELS

Teams from Abbotsford's Ace All-Star Cheerleading and Dance have gotten off to a strong start to the competitive season.

The Ace squads have notched a series of top-10 results at local meets, including several podium finishes. At the Pacific Starz competition in Chilliwack in January, the senior level 3 team won silver, while the senior level 2 squad took bronze. At the recent Cheerfest at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, the senior 2 team claimed silver, while the senior 3 and youth squads both earned bronze.

NICKEL, BRINK HONOURED BY UFV

Trevor Nickel and Katie Brink have been named the University of the Fraser Valley/Abbotsford Heat athletes of the week.

Nickel helped the Cascades men's volleyball team to a pair of pivotal wins over the College of the Rockies Avalanche on the weekend. Brink notched a career-high nine points off the bench as the UFV women's basketball team beat Thompson Rivers 80-57 on Saturday.

The Heat sponsor the UFV athlete of the week award.
