Sports in brief: Falcons, Lions victorious in Abby-Mission hoops finals

The Grade 8 basketball teams from W.A. Fraser Middle School swept to victory in the Abby-Mission league finals last Saturday.

The Falcons girls edged the MEI Eagles in an overtime epic – "One of the craziest games I've seen in a while," said head coach Chris Harvey – by a score of 35-32, thus avenging a loss in the finals of the Abby Police City Tournament back in December. The Fraser boys, meanwhile, beat the Eugene Reimer Ravens 42-38 in a game that also came down to the final minute.

"Both teams are pretty fired up about winning," Harvey said.

LIONS ROAR IN TITLE GAME

The Yale Secondary junior girls basketball team won the Abby-Mission league title, knocking off Sardis 48-35.

The Lions were led by Grade 10 captains Lorry Mackay and Simran Sidhu, post player Jade Bird and sharpshooting guard Selah Pankratz. They're the No. 4 seed at the Fraser Valleys this week, and they won their first two games in dominant fashion vs. Clayton Heights (47-17) and Semiahmoo (36-13).
