Abbotsford’s Ben Ball was a runner-up at the BLG Awards, which recognize the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) athletes of the year.
Marc-André Dorion, a hockey player from McGill University, took home the top male athlete prize in a ceremony on Monday evening at Calgary’s Jack Singer Concert Hall.
Ball, a setter with the Trinity Western men’s volleyball team, was one of four finalists, along with Andrew Clark (hockey, Acadia University) and Kyle Quinlan (football, McMaster University).
Ball’s senior season with the Spartans was the stuff of legend. He was named Canada West and CIS men’s volleyball player of the year, and picked up MVP honours at the CIS national championship after leading Trinity Western to its second straight title.
CHUTSKOFF NAMED MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
Abbotsford hockey player Alexandra Chutskoff earned the most improved player award following her rookie season with the Finlandia University Lions.
Finlandia is an NCAA Division III program based in Hancock, Mich., and Chutskoff suited up for all 22 games this season, posting one assist.
GOLF SEASON IN FULL SWING
Nick Guenther of Ledgeview Golf and Country Club finished tied for 13th at the Zone 3 Junior Boys Spring Tour event at Sandpiper in Harrison Mills on Sunday.
Guenther shot a round of 75, six strokes back of winner Kevin Ko. Other Ledgeview golfers in the field included Jordon Morford (77), Andrew Alafriz (79), Travis Oddy (79), Cody Stewart (82), Ryan Combs (84) and Callum McDonald (85).
