A pair of weekend wins boosted the Fraser Valley Bruins hockey team into a playoff position in the B.C. Major Midget League.

The Bruins beat the last-place Kootenay Ice twice on home ice – 4-1 on Saturday, and 7-3 on Sunday. Michel Holub led the offence, totaling five points (two goals, three assists) on the weekend.

The local squad moved into the BCMML's sixth and final playoff slot at 15-14-7, and holds its destiny in its own hands with four games remaining in the regular season. The Bruins visit the seventh-place North Island Silvertips this weekend in a season-defining two-game set.

SPIKERS HONOURED BY UFV

Volleyball players Jenna Evans and Adam Chaplin have been named the University of the Fraser Valley's athletes of the week.

Evans, a third-year left side from Abbotsford, led the Cascades women to a pair of weekend wins over the Columbia Bible College Bearcats, totaling 30 kills in the two victories.

Chaplin, a rookie from Mission, led the UFV men in total offence in two five-set losses to the Bearcats, averaging 16 points of total offence per game.
