Abbotsford resident Nick Bilko has been named official of the year by BC Hockey.

Bilko works as a linesman in the WHL, CIS and BCHL, and serves as a referee in junior B. He reffed at the Cyclone Taylor Cup and the Keystone Cup – the junior B provincial and Western Canadian tourneys – and was selected as a linesman for the WHL playoffs, the RBC Cup (junior A national championship) in Vernon and the CIS national championships in Saskatoon. He was the lone B.C. representative at the latter event.

RUGBY IN GERMANY

A trio of Abbotsford rugby players recently traveled to Germany to participate in an international youth sevens tournament.

Autumn Garrett, Morgan Ursel and Morgan Walker were selected for a U17 girls contingent with the Dog River Howlers, a Regina, Sask.-based invitational rugby club, for the Heidelberg International Youth Sevens, which brought together teams from six nations (Germany, France, Israel, Monaco, Holland and Canada). The Howlers’ two girls teams had a combined record of four wins and six losses, and placed fourth and fifth in their division.

HURRICANES PICKED FOR TEAM B.C.

Three football players from Rick Hansen Secondary have been named to provincial under-16 teams which will take part in the 2014 Red River Cup in Winnipeg next month.

B.C. won the tournament last year, and they’re sending two teams to the 2014 edition of the event, which brings together squads from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia in addition to B.C.

Team Blue features Hansen running back Dylan Manocha and receiver Balraj Mangat, while their Hurricanes teammate Arbaaz Gill, an offensive lineman, is on Team Orange.
