Sports in brief: Basketball players to suit up for B.C.

A trio of local basketball players have been named to Team B.C. for the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) next month.

A trio of local basketball players have been named to Team B.C. for the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) next month.

Jaylene Soegard of Robert Bateman Secondary and Denelle Hauck of W.J. Mouat have been selected for the U19 girls basketball team, while Mouat's Corey Hauck is on the U19 boys squad. Soegard is proud to represent the Tahltan Nation of Telegraph Creek, B.C. at the NAIG.

The 2014 NAIG are being held July 20-27 in Regina, Sask. and will feature 3,700 athletes from across the continent competing in 14 different sports.

SOCCER OVERSEAS

Brennen Sawatzky of Abbotsford and Matthew Abbott of Mission are traveling to Europe next month for an international soccer tournament.

Sawatzky, 12, and Abbott, 13, are part of a group of 15 players from around the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley who are making a trip with North Vancouver-based Excel Soccer Academy to the Republic of San Marino for the San Marino Cup July 6-12. The event is billed as the largest Italian youth soccer tourney for boys and girls, featuring 75 teams and 2,000 participants from 18 countries.
