Snowball Classic finals set

Mount Vernon, Burnaby South to square off at Abbotsford Senior on Saturday night

The finals are officially set for the 2019 Snowball Classic basketball tournament.

The Mount Vernon Knights will take on the Burnaby South Rebels in tomorrow’s (Saturday) final at the Abbotsford Senior gym. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.

The finalists had to go through a pair of Abbotsford-based teams in tonight’s (Friday) semi-final games.

The Rebels downed the W.J. Mouat Hawks 81-73 to qualify for the final, while the Knights defeated the host Abbotsford Panthers 110-75.

Mount Vernon also defeated Centennial 102-66 on Thursday, while the Rebels beat Belmont 78-68 to open the tournament. Burnaby South won the 4A provincial title in 2018. The Knights won the Snowball Classic back in 2016.

The Hawks and Panthers will battle for third overall tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Abbotsford Senior officially kicked off the tournament with a 118-47 win over the MEI Eagles on Wednesday, and then upset the Kelowna Owls 96-90 on Thursday. Mouat beat Sir Charles Tupper 80-69 on Thursday, and then also scored an upset with a 76-62 win over Walnut Grove.

Other local teams at the tournament include: the Yale Lions and Robert Bateman Timberwolves.
