A gold medal from Kate Sokolowski highlighted the Valley Royals’ performances at the Sunfair high school cross country meet in Yakima, Wash.

The event drew 2,500 runners from three states and two provinces competing in 12 different races, and Sokolowski, 15, emerged victorious in the junior varsity women’s three-mile run with a time of 19:25. She took an early lead and gained ground on the upward portions of each of the six steep hills that consume a large portion of the challenging Sunfair course.

Callum Pilgrim and Sarya Ross each posted top-10 finishes in their respective races. Pilgrim was second in the varsity 5 race in a time of 19:13, while Ross came up with one of her best-ever performances to take seventh (18:59) in the tough varsity 6 competition.

On the boys’ side, notable performances came from Peter Mitchell (19th, varsity 5) and Aidan Bingert (18th, varsity 3).
