Manpreet Grewal brought home a silver medal from the Canadian Legion Midget Championships in Charlottetown, PEI last weekend.

The 16-year-old hammer thrower is a member of Abbotsford’s Valley Royals track and field club, and she attended the event as a member of the B.C. youth team.

The cross-country jaunt turned out to be a successful venture, as Grewal tossed the three-kilogram implement 48.91 metres to place second to B.C. teammate Courtney Neville-Rutherford (53.18m).

Grewal fell short of her personal best of 50.32m, which she reached three weeks ago at the B.C. championships, but she was pleased with the silver medal.

“I wanted to just go there and be free-minded,” the Abbotsford Senior student said. “I was just over a metre off my personal best. Traveling to a new place, it was pretty good, considering you have to get used to the time difference.”

Grewal’s Royals teammate Alexandria Siemens also took part in the meet and finished eighth in the 800-metre run (2:19.03) and ninth in the 1500m (4:49.79).
