The Peoria Rivermen finished off a weekend sweep of the Abbotsford Heat in decisive fashion, blanking the host squad 5-0 at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on Sunday.
The Heat out-shot the Rivermen 32-18, but Peoria got goals from five different players – Adam Cracknell, Brett Sonne, Stefan Della Rovere, Shaun Heshka and Phil McRae – en route to victory.
Rivermen goalie Jake Allen turned aside every puck the Heat directed his way, and combined with Friday’s 4-1 win, he stopped 71 of 72 shots on the weekend.
Danny Taylor got the start between the Heat pipes on Sunday, and he took the loss.
In the aftermath, Abbotsford head coach Troy Ward pointed out that the Heat are missing nine regulars currently, due to injuries and call-ups.
“It is what it is – I’m a teacher, and we got a bad grade today,” he said. “So what do I do? I’ve got to go teach tomorrow.
“We’ve just got to stay with the process. It’s not the end of the world – it’s okay. We’ll just stay with it, and keep grinding away.”
The Heat (32-24-3-3, 70 points) now sit seventh in the tight Western Conference standings, having been leapfrogged by the Rivermen (34-26-2-1, 71 points), who are now in fifth.
The Heat hit the road this week for a four-game swing through Texas, beginning Tuesday at the Houston Aeros.
