Facing older, more experienced teams, the Abbotsford Outlaws U18B Girls Fastball squad managed a solid fifth-place finish at the provincial championship tournament last weekend at Exhibition Field.

The Outlaws went 2-2 in the 16-team round robin to draw into the playoffs, where they knocked off the top-seeded Parksville Rage in their first game.

Abbotsford lost to Langley and Nanaimo in their two ensuing games, but coach Leasa Lepine says her team itself well against mostly older competition.

"Our pitching did very well and we had some outstanding defensive plays," Lepine said. "They fought very hard."

Prior to the tournament, the Outlaws had focused on the mental part of the game before the tournament. Lepine said that work paid off, with the players buckling down against the tough competition.

"The girls stayed positive the whole time and never gave up," she said.
