Olympic high jumper Mason aims to shine at Diamond League meets

Fresh off his performance at the London Olympics, high jumper Mike Mason will compete in the prestigious Diamond League series in Europe.

Fresh off his performance at the London Olympics, high jumper Mike Mason has received an invitation to compete in the prestigious Diamond League series of meets.

During the next several weeks, Mason – who lives in Abbotsford and trains with the Valley Royals track and field club – will tour Western Europe, making the following stops for competition:

Aug. 18 – Bierstadt, Germany

Aug. 23 – Lausanne, Switzerland

Aug. 26 – Birmingham, England

Aug. 30 – Zurich, Switzerland

Mason is coming off a strong showing at the London Games. He matched the bronze medal height by clearing 2.29 metres, but the three athletes who shared the bronze – Canada's Derek Drouin, Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim and Great Britain's Robert Grabarz – made it on their first attempt. Mason, who needed three tries to clear 2.29m, finished in eighth place.

HAMMER TIME: GREWAL CHASES GOLD AT CANADIAN LEGION MEET

In other Royals news, Manpreet Grewal left on Wednesday for Charlottetown, PEI where she will take part in the hammer event as a member of the B.C. team at the Canadian Legion Midget Championships.

Grewal earned her place on the team by winning the midget women’s hammer with a personal best throw of 50.52 meters at the recently completed B.C. Jamboree.

Middle distance runner Alexandria Siemens, who is traveling to the Atlantic Coast as part of a summer family vacation trip, will join Grewal at the meet. Alex will take part in both the 800m and 1500m events in Charlottetown.
