Mouat, ACS claim team titles at valley track meet

Final day of competition saw several Abbotsford athletes claim top spots.

The Fraser Valley High School Track and Field Championships took place Monday

W.J. Mouat and Abbotsford Christian School (ACS) both claimed team titles at the Fraser Valley High School Track and Field Championships, which were held last week at Rotary Stadium.

Mouat finished first place in the combined team senior division class, besting Lord Tweedsmuir and Maple Ridge secondary.

The school also won the male senior division crown and finished second in the male junior division class.

ACS claimed top spot by just one point in the Grade 8 combined team class. In the Grade 8 female and male classes, ACS finished second and third, respectively.

Like the first two days of competition (for results, see the May 15 edition of The News), the final day of competition on Thursday saw several local athletes claim top spots.

In the pole vault, MEI’s Tim Bertness claimed top spot in the senior boys event, with Mouat’s Joven Natt finishing second.

In the junior boys class, Mouat’s Devon Kular jumped to victory, with teammate Amrin Bhangu taking third place.

And in the junior girls pole vault ACS’s Janessa Minderhoud claimed third spot.

In the senior boys triple jump, ACS’s Aaron Postma finished first, with MEI’s Bertness claiming second spot.

ACS’s Cassie Brandsma finished first in the Grade 8 girls triple jump.

Mouat’s Vikramjit Gondara, who won  the junior boys discus throw earlier in the week, claimed his second throwing crown of the meet with a hammer throw of 57.79 metres.

ACS’s Cole Brandsma, meanwhile, added to his two track podiums with a first-place finish in the Grade 8 boys javelin throw.

In the senior boys hammer throw, Mouat’s Jayden Driver finished second, while Yale’s Nate deBoer claimed third spot.

And Mouat’s Melissa Gentry finished third in the junior girls hammer throw.

It was also another successful day on the track.

Mouat’s Josh Adhemar claimed top spot in the senior boys 400-metre hurdles, while Mouat teammate Alicia Unruh claimed second in the senior girls 1,500-metre steeplechase and Aidan Bingert finished third in the senior boys 800 metres.

Rick Hansen’s Valerie Mensah-Wilson claimed second spot in the senior girls 200 metres, Bateman’s Abigail Takaneka finished second in the senior girls 400-metre hurdles, MEI’s Hannah Konrad claimed second place in the senior girls 800 metres, and ACS’s Jessica Kampman claimed second spot in the Grade 8 girls 200-metre hurdles.

The Grade 8 boys 200-metre hurdles saw ACS’s David Williamson and Connor Piers finish second and third, respectively.

Rick Hansen claimed the top prize  in the senior girls 4x100 relay, and finished second in the junior boys 4x100 relay.

That race was won by Mouat’s squad. The school also finished second in the senior boys 4x100 event.

MEI, meanwhile, finished third in the Grade 8 boys 4x100 relay.
