Mortensen heads to Toronto for the 2015 Pan American Games

Canada will face off against Colombia, Nicaragua, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the U.S. in preliminary play, with semi-finals beginning, July 18.

Abbotsford’s Jared Mortensen and the Canadian national team will be at the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games this weekend, as the men open the tournament against the Dominican Republic Saturday, July 11 at 7:05 p.m.

Mortensen is coming off a strong national team debut following a game pitched against the United States College National Team on July 7, in Canada’s only win at the Americas Baseball Festival.

The right-handed pitcher gave up a solo home run in the first inning but retired 11 in a row and completing his four-inning outing with two strikeouts in a 12-2 victory.

Mortensen used to pitch for the NAIA-level LSU-Shreveport Pilots. He went undrafted in 2012 before signing with the Grand Prairie AirHogs of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball before obtaining a minor league deal with the Tampa Bay Rays affiliate, the Montgomery Biscuits, for the 2014-15 season.
