PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The BC Winter Games have been a sports tradition in our province since 1978 and for many promising athletes, it is an important step towards competing in the Canada Games and other prestigious national and international events including the Olympic Games. Inspiring athletes like Mission’s very own Olympic medalist Brent Hayden.

In February 2014, the BC Winter Games are coming to Mission and we couldn’t be more proud and excited to host this wonderful event. The Games will bring approximately 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials to our city and we want to make sure we’re ready to provide them with a warm, friendly welcome and the best Games experience possible.

With so much to do in preparation, our current focus is on building a strong base of volunteers who will support all aspects of the Games. Almost 700 people have already signed up to volunteer and by February we are anticipating more than 2,000 volunteers will be on board to help bring the Games to life. We have a wide variety of volunteer positions available to suit the talents and interests of everyone. Some of the areas we need volunteers for include: registration, results processing, event hosting, bus guides, dorm hosts, assisting at competitions, food services, security, traffic control, marshalling, general cleanup and site patrols. If you’re interested in volunteering, but don’t know exactly what you’d like to do, no worries, simply get in touch and we will be sure to find the perfect position for you.

While Mission will be the official host community for this celebration of BC’s best athletes, the excitement of the games isn’t limited to Mission. Events will be taking place throughout the Lower Mainland with competitions in Abbotsford, Walnut Grove, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Hemlock Resort and even the Callaghan Valley. With that in mind, if you have friends or family that live in any of our venue areas we hope you will encourage them to get involved and support the Games as well.

Hosting the BC Winter Games will bring many positive and lasting benefits to Mission. In addition to the economic benefits and community spirit that will undoubtedly be a result, building an experienced group of community-minded volunteers is sure to have a huge positive effect on the community for years to come. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to make a difference in your community and have fun doing it!
