Abbotsford's Steve Marshall and the Canadian men's indoor volleyball team is moving on.

Team Canada defeated Italy for the first time ever in any International Volleyball Federation competition on Monday to advance to the playoff stage at the Olympics.

Canada won in four sets (25-23, 25-17, 16-25 and 25-21) to punch their ticket to the playoff round.

It was Italy's first loss at the 2016 Summer Olympics, and it was a must-win for Canada, who faced elimination with a loss.

Marshall played in the third set and recorded one dig during his time on the court.

Canada finished off preliminary action in second place in their pool with nine points, and now take on Russia on Wednesday in round one of the playoff round. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Abbotsford time.

In other local Olympics news, Sophie Schmidt and the Canadian women's soccer team are set to battle Germany today (Tuesday) at noon.

Canada defeated Germany 2-1 in preliminary action on Aug. 9. If Canada wins, they move on to the gold medal game against the winner of today's Brazil vs. Sweden game. The losers play for bronze. Medal games for women's soccer occur on Friday.
