The battle for semifinal berths is heating up at the Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, which is running this week at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre.

Through 17 draws, Alberta's Cathy King has clinched a playoff spot on the women's side, leading the way at 8-1. She knocked off B.C.'s Penny Shantz 8-5 on Thursday morning.

Right behind King are Nova Scotia's Nancy Delahunt, who has Colleen Jones throwing last rocks, and Newfoundland and Labrador's Cathy Cunningham at 7-2. Saskatchewan's Darlene Gillies and defending champ Heidi Hanlon, both at 5-4, are tied for fourth.

On the men's side, Alberta's Rob Armitage and B.C.'s Dennis Graber lead the way at 7-1. Newfoundland's Glenn Goss is third at 6-2, while Ontario's Brian Lewis and Northern Ontario's Rob Gordon are tied for fourth at 5-3.

The semifinals run on Saturday (women 2 p.m., men 7 p.m.), and the finals on both sides of the draw are at 11 a.m. Sunday.
