Manitoba Moose goalie Eddie Lack kicks out a shot as a pair of Heat forwards

If the Abbotsford Heat end up missing the Calder Cup playoffs, they’ll look back and rue the day they crossed paths with Eddie Lack. The Manitoba Moose goalie single-handedly stole two crucial games from the Heat at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg on the weekend, backstopping the Vancouver Canucks’ farm team to a 3-2 shootout win on Friday, and 2-1 regulation-time triumph on Sunday. Abbotsford dominated both contests, out-shooting the Moose 47-24 on Friday and 45-26 on Sunday. But Lack was more than up to the task, earning first star honours both games after stopping a combined 89 shots. Lack’s heroics dealt a blow to the Heat’s playoff hopes. At 34-27-4-6 for 78 points, they’re five points in arrears of the Hamilton Bulldogs for the North Division’s third and final guaranteed playoff spot. They must also leapfrog the Toronto Marlies (81 points) and Grand Rapids Griffins (80 points) in the process. The good news is, Abbotsford has at least one game in hand on every other team in the Western Conference, and all of their remaining nine contests are against North Division foes. The Heat open a two-game set in Hamilton on Tuesday, then return to Abbotsford for their final four home games of the regular season – Friday-Saturday against the Griffins, and next Monday-Tuesday against the Bulldogs. The Heat got a huge spark on the weekend from Carter Bancks, who returned to the lineup after missing 51 games due to a concussion. On Friday, the feisty rookie forward dropped the gloves with Manitoba’s Yann Sauve after taking exception to a hit on teammate Ryan Stone in the second period, and his third-period goal knotted the score 2-2 and forced overtime. On Sunday, Bancks set up Ryan MacMurchy to give the Heat a 1-0 lead, but the Moose rallied behind goals from Mark Flood and Marco Rosa.ICE CHIPS: • Aaron Marvin made his professional debut with Abbotsford on Saturday, registering a shot on goal and an even plus-minus rating. The 22-year-old centre signed an amateur tryout contract with the Heat last week. Marvin, the Calgary Flames' third-round draft choice in 2006, spent the past four seasons playing NCAA hockey at St. Cloud State. • Heat forward Matt Keith is the team’s AHL Man of the Year award recipient, recognizing his contributions to the local community and charitable organizations. Abbotsford native Ryan Craig was also a Man of the Year winner, representing the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Winners are selected from each of the 30 AHL clubs, and one will be chosen as the recipient of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award.• Heat defenceman Matt Pelech is eligible to return from his two-game suspension on Tuesday.
